Our Massage Therapies

bowen massage therapist Brisbane

The Bowen Technique is a cross fibre muscle release technique that balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. There are regular pauses between the series of gentle moves to give the body the required time to allow the body to reset and heal itself.
There are various schools of protocols originating from the teachings of Mr Tom Bowen, the founder of the Bowen Technique. The healing is not considered massage but rather a non invasive muscle release technique consisting of a series of gentle cross fibre moves that have long term benefits as long as the injury or pain is not re-aggravated.

Bowen Technique strives to find the origin of a problem and is therefore very effective for muscular-skeletal problems, including ankle, knee, lower back and neck pain.
Other problems addressed by the Bowen Technique include:
* Sciatic pain * Asthma * Dizziness * Frozen shoulder * Migraines * Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) Whiplash * Carpal Tunnel Syndrome * Many muscle or joint pains of unknown origin.
A treatment usually requires the client to lie on a bed or treatment couch and can be performed through light clothing. Sessions can last from 30 minutes to an hour. It is usually recommended to have two to three sessions of the Bowen Technique with a break of 7 to 28 days between each session.
Paula’s regular clients have enjoyed benefits from 2- 14 years before the old injury re-surfaced, usually due to their busy lifestyles and having to work in their chosen fields.

  • Increased energy, better sleep
  • Reduced stress hormones, reduced depression and anxiety (also improve outcomes for the baby in utero)
  • Swelling (Edema) in feet, ankles and hands
  • Enhanced lactation and enhanced mother’s “nesting” instincts and abilities to nurture her infant
  • Increased blood flow and lymphatic circulation, assisting removal of wastes

Pregnancy is seen as the most beautiful and exciting time of woman’s life, but sometimes it can bring along many aches and pains. The body is adjusting everyday with physical and emotional changes happening over a short period of time. You might experience various physical pains and aches as your growing belly shifts the centre of balance and muscles in your lower back and glutes (buttocks) have to work harder. Hormonal changes in woman’s body might make you feel stressed or anxious, or even cause nausea or calf cramps. When an expectant mum lives with chronic stress, her baby in utero is also affected by the constant flow of stress hormones circulating in the maternal blood stream. It is important to remember that nurturing yourself during pregnancy means also nurturing your baby at the same time.

If there have been any complications with your pregnancy, I kindly ask discussing with your doctor if massage is safe with your condition prior to your massage appointment. After all, we want the best possible outcome for you and your baby!

This technique reaches down to the deep layers under the skin, up to 3 inches !
Cupping also uses heat to suck out toxins and accumulated stress and tensions.
The suction created through cupping method will loosen impacted nerve endings thus restoring them to their original state.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.
It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.
Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

Cupping is one of the best forms of deep tissue massage and one of my preferred methods

Relaxation at it’s most sublime.
Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best-known type of massage. If it’s you’re first time Swedish massage is the perfect place to start.
Paula uses massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes along with kneading, friction and stretching.
Swedish massage uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and create other health benefits.

After very personal cancer journeys with family and dear friends from 2010, I began treating people with cancer. In 2020 I decided to embark into formal Oncology massage trainings. In 2022 I completed advanced trainings with Oncology massage.

It continues to fascinate me at the difference made to people’s wellness by receiving this type of massage. In the early days of my massage career there was no fear around giving or receiving massage if you had cancer. Over the years, it has turned into a more general concern that massage could increase the risk of cancer cells spreading to other parts of the body? There is absolutely no evidence that this occurs.

I have only ever witnessed positive results and many scientific studies have shown that Oncology Massage is effective in reducing symptoms such as stress, pain, anxiety, depression, nausea and fatigue in people who have had chemotherapy or surgery for cancer.

I always make the client is as comfortable as possible and we work with many props. I have a massage chair for those who do not want to lay on their chest or be in a prone position. There are many sponges, cushions, towels, soft music and a room temperature suitable for the client.

The massage style itself is slow light strokes working with the fascia, engaging the relaxation response. It is a beautiful experience where you will feel supported, knowing your therapist is aware of the contraindications to specifically tailor the massage to your needs.

You are welcome to be treated while you are on chemotherapy or radiation, your massage will be adjusted to suit around your program, ports or other devices that maybe attached to you. Some people who have had chemotherapy experience tingling in their hands or feet, peripheral neuropathy. This is often helped with massage. Radiation, we will not be working within a hand distance of the direct radiation site or use any lotions or oils in that area until some weeks after your last treatment.

Oncology massage adjusts pressure, speed, duration and the direction of strokes to provide a safe session for a person with cancer at any stage of the disease. It is particularly helpful in reducing lymphedema, swelling caused by a build-up of

lymph fluid. Manual lymphatic drainage knowledge is essential and to follow these protocols.

Having a regular massage means someone else is keeping an objective eye on the affected limb/area to assess changes. Comprehensive notes are kept, and some cases are escalated if there are any signs of trauma, heat, redness, tenderness or swelling.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) also helps to maintain mobility and flexibility and relieves discomfort and tightness in the affected areas. Scarring techniques have also been very successful, and the reduction of cording equally fascinating and so quick to disperse.

I personally like to give some home-care instructions to my clients, I find if they give their areas a lot of love and do the self-massage or scarring techniques at home, beneficial results can occur much faster.
